CABLE STAY BRIDGE | Credit : PWD Maharashtra, India |
A cable stayed bridge consists of one or more tall columns (Known as pylon or tower), with cables supporting the bridge deck.
In the cable-stayed bridge, the Pyłon is the primary vertical load-bearing structure. there are bearings are provided at pylon for vertical load carrying to support the deck at pylon location and the deck is suspended through stay cables in which bearings are provided at deck for vertical load carrying.
The nature of support in the Longitudinal and Transverse directions at pylon and abutments or piers are provided to suite design requirements. The stay cable bridges are constructed based on post-tensioning technology.
India has recent focus on accelerated construction of large number of special bridge structures like Cable Stayed Bridges, Extradosed Bridges, so Indian Road Congress (IRC) felt the need to prepare separate documents for such bridges.
The IRC Committee takes the responsibility of preparing the document for Cable Stayed Bridges with the technological input in 8-9 years before. This document for [IRC SP 136-2023] Cable Stayed Bridges was taken up to cover concepts, planning, aesthetics, design, analysis, wind and seismic effects, material, quality control, bearings, inspection, maintenance, structural health monitoring, etc. was undertaken by Committee of IRC.
